Golden Globe win, Oscar nomination — John Legend added another highlight to his recent resumé by delivering a poignant rendition of “America the Beautiful” at Super Bowl XLIX.
As a prelude to the national anthem, Legend brought the University of Phoenix Stadium crowd to attention with a somber, piano-backed take on the song. With his shiny leather jacket matching his glistening black piano, Legend had style to spare, and of course, the vocals to carry the minimal ballad throughout the stadium.

Legend has been riding high lately thanks to the success of “Glory,” his original song for the 2014 civil rights era drama Selma. In May 2014, Legend’s ballad “All of Me,” hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, giving him his first chart-topper on the tally.
In related patriotic pregame festivities, the Super Bowl XLIX’s national anthem was performed by Idina Menzel.
