Daddy Yankee turns 36 today! After countless of international hits, the Puerto Rican star has paved the way for many reggaetoneros throughout the years. We are celebrating The Boss’ blazing career by counting down our 10 favorite music videos. Which one is your favorite?
1. The Puerto Rican star’s music video for “Pasarela” will inspire you to run your daily mandaditos as if you are strutting the runway! Yes, you aren’t alone on that one. Directed by Carlos Perez, the new video features the Big Boss inspiring everyday women to dump their drab looks and transform into fashion-forward divas. Female empowerment from a reggaetonero? We love it!
2. In 2005, El Cangri’s gritty and addictive track “Rompe” hit the streets in full force! The hit single held a steady three-month run at the #1 spot on Billboard’s Hot Latin Tracks. We love the video’s military style (directed by Jessy Terrero) to go along with Daddy Yankee’s sharp lyrics.
3. You must have been under a rock if you didn’t hear Daddy Yankee’s “Gasolina” playing non-stop in the summer of 2005! The hit song, produced by Luny Tunes, off of the Puerto Rican reggaetonero’s album “Barrio Fino” received countless of nominations for the Latin Grammy, Latin Billboard, and MTV Video Music Awards. Years later, this single continues to be a staple in the reggaeton genre.
4. Yankee paid homage to the traditional reggaeton sound for his track, “Perros Salvajes.” The video directed by Carlos Martin features the star hitting up an underground club filled with sexy dancers in fishnets, pierced bodyguards, and a mosh pit of sweaty fans. Sexy.
5. Get your shine on! This electric video, directed by Carlos “Bambam” Martin, inspires fans to dance the night away with a catchy hybrid of mambo, soca and dancehall beats. No wonder the track off of Daddy Yankee’s sixth studio album, Prestige, hit number one on Billboard’s Latin Pop Songs and Latin Songs charts. We love the creative concept of blending nature’s elements into one addictive video!
6. Who doesn’t feel like a supermodel when “Pose” is blasting in the background? The hit single, off of Daddy Yankee’s “Talento de Barrio” album, was the party anthem of 2008. Relive the club hit and strike your pose!
7. In 2007, Daddy Yankee released “Impacto” and everyone in el barrio was hooked! The track was even nominated for “Song of the Year” at the 2008 Premios Lo Nuestro. Later The Big Boss dropped a remix featuring Fergie from The Black Eyed Peas. We love both versions, but we’ll keep it classic for his cumpleaños!
8. In 2009, Daddy Yankee dropped “Grito Mundial” as the first single off of his ninth album “Mundial.” The victorious and upbeat track played for many 2010 World Cup promotional clips. Dale!
9. The brokenhearted bachelor’s anthem dropped in 2005 and is still a playlist favorite! Off of his third studio album, Barrio Fino, the track, produced by Luny Tunes, was a close contender to the popularity of his top hit, “Gasolina.”
10. Alerta! The future meets Michael Jackson’s “Scream” era for Daddy Yankee’s video “Descontrol,” directed by Carlos Perez. Can we rock one of those space suits? Seriously…
